Griddy: Free, Open-Source, Incomplete

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I’ll be open-sourcing Griddy this week. It’ll be on Github, available for download with some basic documentation. When I have it ready I’ll post a link.

It will be under the WTFPL license. If you’re not familiar with that license, it’s a quick read. In the future, more of my examples will also be under this license.

I don’t have the time to finish this; I haven’t even touched it since mid-late July. As you can see from the video, it has potential but is very feature-incomplete. I encourage anyone interested to check out the project. I’ll eventually finish it when I’m working on a game which will use it.

I kindly request that you let me know if you do use this for a project just for my own satisfaction knowing that I contributed to something. It’d be nice to see where and to what extend people furthered the development of this tool.

For my screenshots I’ve used assets from Frogames. These will not be included, for obvious licensing reasons, but I do suggest them if you’re looking for models.

September Expectations

I’ve been out of the Unity loop for a bit, but heavily investing my time in browser games and utilizing social networks to extend the possibilities of user interaction. I’ve been thinking a lot and have about three drafts so far. They need a bit more polish before I publish them, but they’re philosophical in nature, more about discovering why and how we utilize social mediums for games.

I hope for it to be thought-provoking. They’re just some musings that (I think) developers should be allocating sufficient time during their design process to incorporate.

Before you think I’ve gone off the “deep end” in favor of social gaming, I would like to just say that I don’t believe many “social games” are in fact games, but rather a type of interactive media that people engage it for recreation. While it may be fun, it doesn’t mean that the activity is in fact a game, which is why some of these browser games befuddle and confuse game designers. Don’t expect me to launch into a series of posts trying to convince you to clone a farming app, because I think we’re can be better than that.

95% > 70%. Ready for 25% more?

An interesting announcement was made from Google at GDC Europe earlier this week. Games sold through the Chrome Web Store will result in developers getting 95% of the revenue, as opposed to Apple’s 70%. Keep in mind there are a lot of questions still surrounding this announcement, so don’t take anything as absolute.

Unite 2010. Will You Waddle?

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Unite 2010 announcement. Unite is Unity’s annual community conference. A lot of tech and talk is exchanged during these three days. It is taking place November 10th to November 12th, 2010 in Montreal, Canada. Since I heard about this conference two years ago, I’ve wanted to attend, and eventually be a speaker as well.

The first year, I was in the US and the conference was in Europe. Then I moved to Europe, and they had the conference in the US! Finally, they’ve decided to place it in between, and thankfully I’m in the country already.

For anyone attending and is interested in dimeRocker, MondoCloud, Facebook or social gaming, let me know. If you’re interesting in dark beer or good coffee, let me know. Or poutine. Amazing stuff.
