(Try to) Be Creative

It’s no secret how much money is in the games industry, and it’s one of the reason there are so many different types of people in it. There are people in it for the art and there are people in it for the money. This isn’t a rant about greedy motives, though people with talents should be aware of those trying to exploit them.

For those who have worked in creative positions, you know how absolutely frustrating it is when someone who doesn’t understand or think like you, manage your tasks. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, catch up quickly with this comic.

Be Remarkable

The last couple months have been filled with discussions about game design, viral design, social game implementation, analytics, etc. Thinking of how to condense some of that torrent into a post kept bringing me to the same tagline which so many people utter:

What features/mechanics must be have to get the largest player base? This is the same mentality for big MMOs (Warhammer, LOTRO, DNDO). Go huge or bust. With social games, it’s how do I get those FarmVille numbers, as if by simply getting that many installs equates to the same value.

What is Indie?

This opinion on Gamasutra upset me this week. The author concludes that the mere discussion of what is and isn’t “indie” is a waste of time, and that developers have enough to focus on with their games and they should just keep developing.

I’m Sensing Some DisUnity….

Yes, I’ve taken a small hiatus from Unity development. I’ve been working heavily in PHP and more web technologies and platforms for the past couple of months, which has slowly taken me away of my normal Unity lurks. Next weekend will be a jolt of Unity, thanks to Ludumdare.
