Status Check: March

March.

Here we are at the beginning of March, 2009. Thirty days of game development has created some new ideas, but all ideas need to be given their own alloted amount of time. Some of the previous ideas have been put on hold.

There have also been issues, personal as well as industry-wide, which makes one think about being independent. Here is the link to the last of a three-part blog series about some issues within the game industry. Quality of Life isn’t a new issue in the industry, but those issues were finally brought to light at a IDGA conference, and we get opinions on the issue from Studio heads.

These problems, especially the mentality of management when it comes to game development, is oh-so more encouraging to be on my own, completely independent and small-time. We will see what comes.

Looking Back:
Harmony: I gave the first glimpse at a possible Unity project, which is prototyping toolset for the 3d engine.

iPhone: iPhone Unity ran into some performance issues, which has made me reconsider (for now) purchasing the iPhone license. With iPhone Basic, you have to incude the whole package (physics, etc) even if you don’t use them. iPhone Advanced allows you to “trim” away what you don’t need. So, at the moment, iPhone development might be on hold. Projects which were meant for iPhone will probably continue, for Mac/PC deployment.

Terra: My own small virtual world is becoming more important to the sustainability of my own game development career. I need to start establishing and meeting milestones to make sure this project comes to fruitation.

Looking Ahead:
Industry: Currently I’m getting “real industry” experience at the studio I’m freelancing for. It’s fun and challenging to say the least. My participation will be for at least a couple of years, and would change only if Terra was launched.

Tutorials: I would really like to produce a few more code-centric scripts for Unity over the next week or two. The PHP tutorials are almost done, and after them I’d like to do something which would be related to how Harmony is built. Since people who use Harmony may be looking at the code to teach themselves, I might as well have some tutorials related to what they’d see.
